Here are a couple of tips to speed up your Windows XP computer and help keep you protected and secure online. First you need to control which programs load on startup: Many of the programs you install on your computer automatically configure themselves to launch at startup, usually invisibly. The truly essential ones, such as anti-virus and firewall products, generally run as services and run fine in the background. Other less important software like media players don't need to be running continually.

These extra programs slow the boot process and then severely suck up resources like memory and CPU cycles. It is pretty easy to control which applications launch on startup. The System Configuration Utility lists all these applications in one place:

1) To get there: Click the ‘Start' button then choose the ‘Run' command.

2) In the text box type "msconfig". - Across the top of the dialog box select the ‘Startup' tab.

3) The Startup Tab lists all the programs that launch at start-up. To disable any of these simply un-check the box on the left. Only non-essential programs are listed here it should be safe to un-check pretty much anything. If it turns out you needed it just go back and re-check it.

4) Once you are done re-boot the machine. 5) When the Desktop returns you will be presented with a window that says you have chosen Selective Startup. Just Check "Do not show this window again" and click OK.

To keep your computer secure, turn on automatic updates. Seems like every virus writer has nothing better to do then attack Windows operating systems. Keeping the system patches and security fixes is critical. During the setup of XP Service Pack 2 with a new computer or an up-grade you are asked whether or not to turn on automatic updates, if you made the mistake of checking no you can find this option in the Windows Security Center (Start / Control Panel) and change it back. Even with all its faults, XP is a powerful operating system that has many good security features.

Many Windows components, things like Network Services or Solitaire are easy to remove through the Add or Remove programs configuration window (Start / ControlPanel / Add and Remove Programs / Windows Components). A good example would be MSN Messenger. To remove this from startup follow these steps:

1) In Windows Explorer (right click Start / Explore), navigate to C:WindowsInf and make a copy of Sysoc.inf.

2) Double click on Sysoc.inf and it will open in Notepad.

3) Press Ctrl H (opens Find and Replace) and replace the string ,hide, with ,, then save and replace the file. Now all the hidden components will appear.

4) Then follow the steps above for removing programs from the startup menu.

To restore a corrupted system file: If a necessary system file should become missing or corrupted by a virus you can replace it from your Windows CD.

1) Go to Start / Search and type in the file name replacing the last letter with an underscore (ex. Filename.ex_).

2) If the file is found, open a command prompt (Start / Run, type CMD in the textbox).

3) At the prompt type expand followed by the full pathname of the file and destination (expand D:Windowsfilename.ex_ C:Windowsfilename.exe) where D: is the letter of your disc drive. If either pathname contains spaces surround the entire pathname with double quotes. If the file isn't found search again using the un-modified file name, it is probably in a CAB file, Windows treats these as folders, simply drag the new folder to the destination while holding down the right mouse button then select Copy Here.

If you've deleted a file on your computer, and you've emptied your recycle bin, don't despair. When a file is deleted on a computer, it's not erased immediately from the system. What actually happens is the computer marks the deleted file as "deleted", and it is no longer in view to users within your computer's files. The file remains on the hard drive until new data is saved over it, similar to recording songs on cassette tapes. So, in order for computer data recovery to happen on files that have been deleted, you'll need to attempt to recover them before new data has been written over the file.

The best thing you can do to increase your chances of success is to immediately stop using the computer until you've retrieved the deleted file. The more you use your computer, the more information will be saved and the more likely the information could be saved over the file you are hoping to get back!

Some of the major players are Norton, McAfee and Computer Associates. There are a great many smaller vendors as well.

Choosing to go VoIP is easy; which VoIP provider you sign up with is trickier. With the number of companies and the diversity of packages to choose from, it’s hard to tell if you’re really getting your money’s worth. Here are some things to consider as you narrow down your choices:

• How much are you willing to spend? Look at your budgets. How much can you allot for this service? How much do you really save by getting it? • How much of your phone calls are long distance? If you rarely make long distance phone calls then you won’t really feel the “savings”; but if you have friends and family around the world, then VoIP is a lifesaver. Look at your previous phone bills and make a rough estimate. Compute the cost of those calls on a traditional phone provider and through VoIP.
• How good is their customer service? Customer service is frequently the worst in companies that offer very low rates. They usually have a deluge of subscribers whose needs or quieries they may not be able to handle Check out how their after-salves customer service is by asking friends who use VoiP or VoiP sites that have message boards?
• What features are included in the package? Some packages may appear that they are cheaper but It could be because they have a very skeletal list of services. Others have a higher fee but offer so many additional services. But crucial to this is asking yourself which services are most important to you. Do you want call waiting? Do you need 3 way calling? Do you want fax capabilities? By defining what your priorities are you can weigh the overall monthly subscription fees with the kind of value you get for your money.
• Can you keep your old number? Some companies allow you to transfer your existing phone number to the VoIP service. This is a very helpful feature that saves you the trouble of informing others or, even more importantly, losng contact with those who were not told about the change. This can be too much of a risk to people who run homebased businesses.
• Do they offer emergency services? Not all VoIP services allow emergency numbers like 911. In this case it’s advisable that you retain a cell phone or land line. It pays to be safe than sorry!
• How many international calls do you need to make? There is a wide variety of packages that appropriate a certain number of minutes for long distance calls. Find out your typical usage and assess how much you need.

What you will learn form this tip: This tip highlights an aspect of backup that most are not as experienced and comfortable with -- restoring.

Attempting to make a distinction between backup and restore may seem like pure semantics at first; after all -- don't we always refer to backup and restore as one discipline?

Chances are, your data backup administrators have become experts at making sure backups run successfully each night. Over the years, they have likely fine-tuned numerous performance parameters and adjusted schedules to better utilize available hardware resources and capture data at the best time. This experience was acquired through years of daily backups. However, the same cannot be said about data restores and this is probably why we seldom use the term "restore administrators."

Ironically, we spend years learning how to master backups and then one day we are faced with having restore an entire environment in 24 hours! Shouldn't we learn to master the restore process instead? The problem is that we don't restore often enough, and when we do, it is typically a partial restore.

As we design our backup strategy, we need to start planning for restores. Here are a few items that should be addressed in order to increase the efficiency of the restore process:

Complete restore test: The ability to successfully restore critical applications from backups should be tested regularly. Avoid shortcuts; every step of the process should be executed and reviewed for possible issues. Restored data must also be validated to ensure everything is as it should be.

Documentation: As the above restore test is performed, each step should be documented. This will ensure that a single employee does not possess all the knowledge. The documented procedures can then become part of a master plan.

Restore dependencies: Some components of an environment need to be recovered before others can be restored. It is surprising to see how often authentication and networking is overlooked. This must be understood and documented.

Restore priorities: It is essential that the restore priority of applications be clearly established ahead of time by the various business functional areas. The IT team can only restore so many applications at once and unless properly informed, IT will set priority based on their understanding of criticality.

Know what to restore: If your recovery strategy includes a number of standby systems with a loaded operating system and applications, is it necessary to restore any of those files? This requires some backup planning to avoid having to sort out what to restore after the fact.

Backup data retention: How backups are expired must be closely monitored and managed. For example, the relationship between full database backups and associated logs must be clearly understood. Don't assume that automated deletion always works flawlessly and give it a regular check.

Have a plan: Last but not at all least is to have a plan. The critical applications recovery procedures must include the data restore and validation procedures. These procedures are then included as annexes to the disaster recovery plan and ultimately, become part of the overall business continuity plan.

Wireless systems have increasingly become the inseparable ingredients of our lives in the last century because of their instant installation capabilities in addition to obviously cutting mammoth amounts of capital and time that was otherwise being wasted in erection and installation & commissioning. But how big and expanded is the wireless systems industry? And how much they touch our lives? And if I am not stretching things too far, are we being controlled by wireless systems? Well, let's take a critical look at these issues which concerns us all.

Wireless Systems and Communication Ever since Graham Bell and Marconi invented telephone and radio respectively, life has never been the same. Although they didn't revolutionalized things instantaneously they sure caused a ruffle thus signaling what was on the way. Today, without wireless systems communications would grind to a halt. Satellites become dud flying objects of little use if we don't 'connect' through wireless for billions of gigabytes of data transfer every hour.

Consumer Wireless Equipments At the bottom, we have wireless toys which are the rage with children. But the most common wireless system everyone is familiar is cell phone without which most of us can conduct our lives the way we need to. Cell phones have rapidly expanded to exit the wired phones in a matter of a few years. Even the basic phones are going wireless with the advent of CDMA technology. The 3G cell phones can transmit up to 2MBPS of data.

Mobile phones reached their zenith of glory when Motorola introduced satellite phones (Irridium) which didn't even require wireless network but worked with satellites directly.

Connectivity is just notional; look at what broadband has done to wireless systems. Internet no more needs 'wired connectivity' as there is wireless broadband service. IPOD has made world collapse into our pockets. What we imagined till the other year, that wireless systems made useful wireless microphones, was turned upside down by one small pocket gadget called IPOD.

Wireless Gadgets

If we are able to watch news cruising at 50,000' at great speeds, you could imagine what 'the void' (wireless) can do. Let's take a look at some cute gadgets from the current rage.

1. Push to talk phones: Talk, browse internet, watch TV and connect to all your friends by one button push.

2. Pocket PC and wireless LAN for laptops: Pocket PCs double up as cell phones. Laptops connect to LAN with a wireless LAN card.

3. Toys, game controls etc.

4. Home theater, music systems, network booster and headphones etc.

What you will learn from this tip: Archiving, backup and their differences.

Backups and archives consist of copies of data kept for a certain amount of time for future access (at a very high level). In essence, both are very similar in nature except for their respective lifespan. Generally, most view a backup as a short-term retention copy of a file or record in case the original is lost or damaged beyond repair. Conversely, an archive is typically viewed as the means to meet a requirement to retain a record for future reference.

Theoretically, you could take a backup copy of specific data and retain the copy for many months or even years and you would have yourself an archive. In that particular context, the first question that comes to mind is: When does a backup copy become an archive? This is where things get a little muddy. While many IT practitioners associate the term archive with long-term retention, it is not just a question of time. This is mostly due to the way most traditional backup products handle data retention. Keeping track of which "backup jobs" to delete and which ones to keep can become a daunting data management task. Traditional backups are usually part of a sequence, which is typically a series of weekly full backups followed by daily incremental backups that are kept for a predetermined amount of time (i.e., 30 days). In order to keep a copy for a longer period than usual, an out-of-sequence copy must be created. That is, a copy that is not associated with the 30-day retention in our example.

This is where the attributes of an archive start to take shape. We can think of an archive as an out of sequence copy; a copy that is not associated with other copies for retention purposes (i.e., full and incremental). Let's look at other attributes that should differentiate an archive from a backup object:

Archives should not be retained simply based on the number of existing copies. Each archive should be a unique object bearing a time stamp, descriptor and a retention parameter.

We typically backup data to protect it from being lost or altered and because it must remain readily available; it would therefore go against the rules to delete a file after backing it up. Conversely, data is often archived so it can be deleted from its original location because immediate access is no longer required.

Archived data can be extracted from its original context and catalogued or indexed for later retrieval. This is the case for CAS or email archiving products where a message or attachment is taken out of its usual structure and stored elsewhere.

As a general rule, we can go back to the days of paper records and draw a parallel with today's backups and archives. Back then, records were typed or handwritten and carbon copies or photocopies were used for backups. When a document lost some of its daily business relevance but still had to be retained, is was taken out of the filing cabinet, put into a cube-box and sent to some basement or warehouse to be kept as an archive. That said, this is pretty much where the similarities end. We don't have a problem reading a paper document that was archived 50 years ago -- the same cannot be said about electronic archives.

In closing, and without trying to oversimplify things, if a record is copied for protection, we can probably call it a backup. If the same record it stored on some media with particular concern with immediate access, it's probably safe to call it an archive.

How To Setup Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) Port Forwarding

One of the tasks that I face with my network setup is forwarding ports through my router. There are two issues that I came across when dealing with the RDP forwarding. The first was what is the port number of RDP. With a quick search on Google I found that the standard RDP port is 3389.

One thing that I love about all news windows products is the remote desktop features. I previously used PCAnywhere but I find that remote desktop is now almost as good, would like to see a file transfer like PCAnywhere has, but remote desktop is free so that is a plus for it.

Now that you have the port number you can simply go into your router and forward that port through and after enabling your remote desktop feature it will work from outside your network as long as you either know your IP address or have a dynamic dns service like I use. To enable remote desktop in Windows XP and Windows 2003 go to the start menu, find the my computer icon and right click on it. Select the properties option in the drop down list and then click on the remote tag in the window that appears. There you will see the two check boxes, check the second box, and then click on the remote user button. Make sure that the users you want to have access are in the list and then click ok until you have exitted all of the windows. RDP is now enabled on your machine.

So this simple setup would have worked for my network but the issue then became I have several servers that I want access to along with my desktop. Now I could just remote to my desktop and then remote to the other machines from there since they are all on the local network. This would create a lot of data that needed to be transferred though, with limited upstream speeds on your broadband connection you don't want this, and will cause performance issues with RDP. So I had two options, I could change the registry entry like was stated in the article. I will paste that fix here just in case that page has an issue at some point:

Locate the following key in the registry:

On the Edit menu, click Modify, click Decimal, type the new port number, and then click OK. Quit Registry Editor.

The other option I had was to go into my router and specify another external port number and then point that port to the 3398 on the IP address of the machine I wanted to go to. I chose this second option as it was less time consuming and did the trick for me. One appealing thing about the ability to change the port number of RDP is security. If you leave the standard port number then anyone will know to check that port to see if you have Remote Desktop enabled and potentially compromise your network. Let me know if there are any issues with the registry fix though and if there are I will just remove it from this article.

Wireless is clearly the future in computing. As industry giants, such as Intel, Cisco, Nortel, Apple and Proxim all compete for the wireless business, the industry has been left in turmoil of ever-shifting standards and manufacturing consolidations. In fact, since the formation of the IEEE 802.11 committee, over 10 standards have been approved with most requiring a hardware change to leverage the newer technology. The committee's current activities promise more than 13 new standards to meet the insatiable user demand for better untethered access.

"Security is still the biggest problem looming over the technology," says Eric Winegar, President and CEO of NLE, a Utah based wireless network Value Added Reseller. A clear message echoing in the industry shows that access point misconfigurations, along with undefined or unenforced security policies on the wireless network, leave providers of wireless services, i.e. the enterprises and government institutions, vulnerable to attack and compromises security. As wireless network infrastructures age, radio standards will pass them by. "The biggest challenge to security is consistent configuration management and policy monitoring coupled with enforcement," Winegar continues.

With a plethora of manufacturers and proprietary interfaces for management of the access point, the sheer volume of individual radios and management interfaces are staggering. With a typical college campus averaging over 1000 radios, touching each radio for software updates and configuration validation is like painting the Golden Gate Bridge. Before you finish with the last radio, a critical update to patch a vulnerability must be uploaded. First Computer Invented:

Most people when they think of first computer invented they think Bill Gates. This, however, is not true, for the computer was invented long before Bill Gates was around. Bill Gates only revolutionized the computer, buy creating a more compact and useful form of the computer and making it available to everyone with a job.

There are many people out there who would say that the first "computer" was the abacus, invented in Asia about 5000 years ago. I however, wouldn't.

The first of the "modern" computers was invented during World War II, in 1941 by a German engineer named Konrad Zuse. Its name was the Z3 and it was used to help design German airplanes and missile's. Then in 1943, the Allied forces developed a computer called Colossus. It helped decode German messages.

The Mark I, designed by Howard H. Aiken, an engineer working with Harvard and IBM. The Mark I was positively huge, taking up half of a football field. It was useful though and it helped to create ballistic charts for the US Navy during the war.

Shortly after this, came the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC), developed by John Presper Eckert and John W. Mauchly, working with the government and the University of Pennsylvania. ENIAC was about 1000 times faster than The Mark I but no smarter.

The Use of transistors, ment computers that could store memory and even run programs. Soon after computer languages were invented so that people could change the programs run by the computer. Finally computer research brought us smaller, more useful computers, and eventually the kinds of computers that we have today.

First Laptops Invented:

Although it is a little hard to determine what the first portable or laptop computer was, and when it was invented, we can however say that there is more than one claim to laptop fame. There was even signs of laptops dating back as early as 1979. Designed by a Briton, William Moggridge, for use by NASA in early 1980's. IT was one fifth the weight of any model equivalent in performance and was a 340K byte bubble memory lap-top computer with die-cast magnesium case and folding electroluminescent graphics display screen.

Since then notebook PC's released in 1981 lay clam to being the first. It was the Epson HX-20, a battery powered portable computer, with a 20-character by 4 line LCD display and a built-in printer that started the new widespread desire for these laptop computers.

In January of 1982, Microsoft's Kazuhiko Nishi and Bill Gates begin discussions on designing a portable computer, based on using a new liquid crystal display or LCD screen. LCD technology in 1982? Yeah that's right! Believe it or not we had the technology to make the LCD tvs and monitors that you've seen only recently over 22 years ago. But that's another story in itself.

First PDAs Invented:

First of all PDA stands for personal digital assistants in case you didn't already know. In 1993, Apple Computer Inc. released the very first PDA(personal digital assistants) "The Newton�". For the next three years, PDA sales dwindled, and were almost off the charts. Then, in March 1996, Palm�, Inc. delivered the industry's first truly compelling handheld computer, the PalmPilot. Did you ever imagine that you could actually talk to more than one person using your phone? Well, conference calls allow you to. This means you and your friends can communicate from different places at the same time, and even listen to each others voice without having to put one on hold. Now with the invention of video conference you can even look at each other while talking.

Telephone conference:
A conference call is a telephone call where you can have more than one person listen in to the audio portion of the call. This is so designed that you can also talk during the call, or the call can be set up so that the person you called merely listens in to the call but cannot speak.

Conference calling can be very useful for remote business meetings. To use conference calling, your network needs to be able to provide this service, and your phone should be able to support it. You may also have to add this service to your subscription. In conference calls you can call the people you want to talk to and add them to the call. In some cases the participants call in to the conference calls either by dialing a conference bridge, which is a special kind of telephone that can take multiple calls, or you can do so by using a special telephone number set up for this purpose. This is a very good way of socializing, as you get to meet a lot of new people. Conference calls are mainly used by businesses. By paying some extra charges, you can avail a three-way calling service where you can add a second outgoing call to a call already connected at the same number.

Video conference:
Video conference is one of the greatest achievements of telecommunication technology. This allows two or more locations to communicate via two-way video and audio transmissions simultaneously. It is called visual collaboration and is a special type of groupware.

The technology behind this is digital compression of audio and video streams in real time. Codec which is coder/decoder performs the compression. Up to 1:500 compression rates can be achieved. The resulting digital form of 1's and 0's is then further subdivided, and then transmitted through some network like ISDN or IP. Audio modems are used in the transmission line that uses POTS or the plain telephony network in video telephony, as it converts the digital pulses to or from analog waves in the audio spectrum range.

The other components which are needed for video conference are:
# Video input - allowing you to take pictures or videos of the person like video camera or web cam
# Video output - where the image can be seen, such as a computer monitor or television
# Audio input - microphones
# Audio output - where the final voice can be reached, usually loudspeakers associated with the display device or telephone
# Data transfer - analog or digital telephone network, LAN or Internet

Online conference:
A web conference or online conference, unlike a phone conference, has visuals. Web conferencing can be a useful tool in your own work. You can conduct meetings at any time where everyone can participate equally just like in a conference room meeting. You can exchange architect's sketches, storyboards for a new advertising campaign, a graph of sales figures, and even medical x-rays, with everyone viewing the same thing at the same time. In a web conference, every participant would be able to see what you are showing at that moment. Another benefit is that you can pull and share any document on your computer into the conference anytime you want to. You can easily demonstrate a website or any software, or show slides through a PowerPoint presentation, as if your colleagues were sitting in your office. And while doing this, you and the other participants can simply talk with each other as you would in an ordinary phone conference.

Why Data Backups so important for people

All computers and their components are subject to failure. In fact sooner or later every business will be confronted with some type of computer failure. The largest threat to businesses during a failure will be some type of data loss or data corruption. While the causes of data loss and data corruption vary, not all are easily fixed.

When a data loss or data corruption occurs, many times the only option is to restore the data from a previously created backup of the affected data. Many businesses today over look the importance of data backups until they suffer the unexpected loss or corruption of valuable data. Once this occurs it would be too late, unless the business is lucky enough to restore the data by physically recreating all the affected files from scratch. This of course is only possible if they have a hard copy or another source from which to recreate the data. It will also cost the business a valuable amount of man hours in recreating the data as well. That is if they are lucky enough to be able to even recreate the data in the first place.

If your business has made backups of all data stored on the hard drives, restoring that data will go much more quickly and require a lot less effort. It will also require a lot less man hours and tears shed over the loss that has occurred.

Today there are many options available to businesses for storing and backing up their data. Some of the options available are tape drives and tape libraries, CD-R's and CD-RW's to DVD technologies. There is also the option to use NAS (Network Area Storage) and SAN (Storage Area Networks) and even remote backups over the internet. Even Windows XP/Server 2003 offers a restore point in case your system becomes corrupted. Of course just having these tools available to you is not enough. They need to be used properly and on a continuous basis to be effective.

Sooner or later all systems will face some type of failure that will require a restore from backup. The point is to perform those backups so they are there when you need them.

It is recommended that you sit down with your systems administrator to create a backup plan for your business immediately if you have not done so already. Also recommended, is that you review your backup plan yearly as well. When discussing your backup plan there are certain options to consider. Such as how often to perform the backups and what type of backup media is best suited for your business. Depending on your type of business and how much your data changes from day to day you may want to perform backups weekly, daily, or several times per day. For most small to mid-sized businesses I would recommend a full backup once per week with incremental backups at the end of each work day.

You will also want to consider whether or not to keep some of your backups off site in the case your business is affected by some type of natural or man made disaster. In addition you may also want software to monitor your backup process in order to ensure that your backups are not corrupted as well. This is a common experience with some types of backup media as well.

Finally you may also want to perform a system restore on an occasional basis so that you can check the effectiveness of the restoration process that you have set in place and to practice it so it goes as smoothly as possible.

Following these steps may be essential to your business continuity should your systems fail and you suffer a loss or corruption of data. Setting up a backup plan as well as a restoration plan will also go a long way in ensuring your business operations if you run into a system failure. This would help establish a "who is to do what" list if your systems should fail.

Failing to backup your business data, especially mission critical data is nothing short of a recipe for disaster. Nothing is as important to your business as the data that sits on the hard drives of your systems.

The Best Choice for Data Recovery Choice

The best defense against a loss of data is a really solid and faithful backup routine of important files to reliable media. It's also a good idea for the media to be removable and portable if possible so that even if something happens to your whole computer for any reason, the data is protected by being in a totally different physical area.

OK, so that is the best solution to data loss. But what if you have not been backing up your drive like you should and now you find yourself confronted with the daunting task of getting all the important files back that were on your computer before the emergency happened? (By the way, you can take some comfort in knowing that quite a few people find themselves in this situation. You are not alone.) What are your choices at this point?

Well, basically there are two ways of recovering data from a damaged disk, either by using a data recovery service or a data recovery software package. Either can do the job, but there are some factors that should go into your decision about which one to use. First, are you pretty computer savvy? If you are then maybe data recovery software will work for you. If not, do not try this method at all. The other is how much time do you have to spend on retrieving this data? If you have lots of time to put into it, then consider doing the job yourself with a reputable software package. If you don't have much time to devote to this endeavor, don't waste both time and money with the software option.

If you have decided upon using a data recovery service, you should know that the odds are that you will get a good portion, if not all of your data back. The generally accepted success rate in the industry is around 80%. Much of the success will depend on the skill and determination of the data recovery specialist who will be working on your drive. They all have sophisticated software tools to work with, but data recovery is not as simple as just plugging in a piece of software, walking away and coming back when it has found all the files. It often requires a specialist who is a bit of a detective, andnot easily discouraged, to get back a good portion of data, especially on drives with physical damage.

Don't be surprised to get two quotes for data recovery from some companies either. One for logical data retrieval that is much easier to handle and will be a much lower figure, and one for physical damage which is far more challenging and therefore rightly costs more. You will also find that cost quotes will often vary considerably. It is usually best to choose somewhere in the middle of the pack toward the higher end. The reason for this is that some companies engage in a bait and switch tactic that indicates that they will cost less initially, but when they actually receive the drive they wil claim that upon review the cost will be much higher. It's best to avoid messing with these companies at all.

So if you have lost data and have no backups to fall back on, data recovery can still be done. Just use the guidelines presented in this article for choosing the data recovery method that will work best for you.

c.. Select Text File (Comma Separated Values) as the export format.

d.. Click Export.

e.. Select the location you want to export your address book to using the Browse... button.

f.. Give your backup copy a meaningful name.

g.. Click Next.

h.. Select the fields you want to include in your backup.

i.. Finally, select Finish.

j.. Click OK.

k.. Click Close to end the process (successfully, Ihope).

Very Important Rules in Data Backups

Backups of company data are carried out for two main reasons. The first is to cater for those times when a document is inadvertently deleted or damaged and you wish to recover the original document; the second is as part of a disaster recovery plan in case something catastrophic happens to your computers (e.g., victims of a fire or theft).

Backups cost time, money and effort to implement, and they are of no value right up until the time you need them. This means they tend to be given a low priority, but ultimately they may easily represent the difference between your business surviving and failing. In this TipSheet, we look at the most common mistakes businesses make with backups.

1. Backup often

Re-entering data is tedious and frustrating. Backing up your company data once a week means that the most you should ever have to re-input is one week's worth Backing up your company data once a day means the most you should ever have to re-input is one day's worth. Frequent backups lessen the impact of data loss.

2. Don't keep any volatile data on desktop PCs

In many organisations, documents are kept on the hard drive of desktop PCs. It is unlikely that this is backed up regularly, if at all. A PC can easily be replaced: last week's quotations may not be so easy to replace. In particular, check that email is not stored on the local hard drive (this is very common in small to medium size businesses). All documents, spreadsheets, email, etc should be kept on a central server, which is in turn backed up regularly.

3. Automate the backup process

Backups are tedious to do. At 6:30pm, most people would prefer to set off home or join colleagues in the bar rather than stay in the office to find the correct tape and start a backup. Automating tedious tasks means they get done.

4. Monitor the backup process

While automating backups is a good idea, do check that they are running correctly. Make sure new files are being backed up; make sure the files of new users are being backed up. A quick check once a week could avert a much more serious problem later.

5. Keep backups offsite

If your business premises suffer a fire or flood, it is likely that backup media will be lost as well. Fireproof safes only protect media for a given time, typically one hour - if you use one, check the manufacturer's specification. If you always keep your backup tape in the server then when it is stolen the thief will probably throw the tape away. It's worth nothing to him, but it could represent bankruptcy to you.

6. Produce a "backup recovery" manual

A major disaster is not the time to try to remember how to recover data from your backup media. Have an idiot-proof, step-by-step procedure written - with a copy stored off-site - detailing how to reinstate your company data.

7. Test the recovery procedure periodically

Without warning, give the backup recovery manual to a member of staff and see how long it takes them to recover data. Many organisations never do this! No one involved with creating the manual or the backups themselves should be involved in the test. The results of the test should be analysed and the manual updated accordingly. A recovery test should be carried out at least twice a year. This proves both that the backups themselves are usable, and that your organisation understands how to use them if necessary.

After several years of development, swallowable wireless sensors are now ready to begin monitoring the human body. A tiny medical device sold by Buffalo, NY-based SmartPill has received approval by the Food and Drug Administration to be marketed in the United States. The electronic pill is meant to be ingested by a patient; it then gathers information about the digestive system as it travels through it, transmitting the information to a receiver worn by the patient.

The newly approved device, the size and shape of a large vitamin pill, is approved to help clinicians diagnose gastroparesis, a disorder that causes the stomach to empty very slowly. As it journeys through the GI tract, a radio transmitter sends information about the time its journey takes, as well as acidity and pressure levels. The level of acidity helps the physician to determine when the capsule enters and leaves the stomach. A receiver that's slightly larger than a cell phone collects the data from the device. And the disposable capsule gets excreted from the body after a day or two. The patient then returns the receiver to the doctor, for downloading and analysis. Each capsule will cost $500, and the entire system, including a docking station and software, costs $20,000.

How Data and MP3 Compression

The MP3 and MP4 generation was generated mostly due to advances in data compression. Let us first take a step back and focus on digital music. There are two types of data in the world: Analog and Digital data. Analog data is real time data, and it is essentially how we perceive the world. As you listen to any music, you are listening to an analog signal. Everything we see and hear is analog. So what is the significance of digital? Digital is a way of storing and transferring this data. Think of a twelve inch ruler. With this ruler, you can measure any distance between between 0 and 12 inches. Depending on how good you are at reading the ruler, you can probably measure to a resolution of 1/16 of an inch. Even though there is measurable distance between these 1/16 inch marks, the distance is rather insignificant to you. At this point, you can record the distance two ways:

1) You can mark the ruler with a pencil and store it in its true "analog" value

2) You can round the value to the nearest 1/16th and record it. This could be referred to as a "digital" value.

Digital is a collection of zeros and ones that represent a number. Because there are two values, the system is base 2. Our normal system is a base 10 system. For example:

The number 1456 is really:

6x(1) + 5x(10) + 4x(100) + 1x(1000) = 1456

Where the number in parentheses are 10^x power.

Let's try a base 2 number of 100110:

0x(1) + 1x(2) + 1x(4) + 0x(8) + 0x(16) + 1x(32) = 38 (decimal)

Where the number in parentheses are 2^x power.

In this base-2 example, the number is referred to as "6-bits". A typical "byte" is normally "8-bits". So instead of storing the number 38, computers would store the number 100110.

So why would you want to do that? There are 6 digitals in base-2 versus two digitals in base-10. The answer is simple! Ones and zeros are much easier to store (It is like a light switch, either ON or OFF). Further, in a base-2 system, there are only 2 possible solutions. In a base-10 solution, there are 10 solutions per digit. The more solutions you have, the more chance to make errors.

Now let's revisit the the analog signal. In this type of data, there are an infinite number of solutions. Mind you, the error won't be great, but you ARE guaranteed some error every time. Every time you recall a analog signal, the results will be varied to some degree.

Think about your cell phone. About 5 years ago, all cell phones were analog. When you entered areas of poor reception, you received static, distortion and noise. Now, most cells phones are digital. As long as a portion of the ones and zeros are transmitted, you will receive a perfect signal every time. (If you transmit the number 1.2 or 1.5 or 0.8, it will always be read a one! i.e., the signal is immune to noise!) If you cannot even read these simple ones and zeros, you drop off completely. The clarity of the signal is perfect and repeatable, as long as the data is present.

Music works in the same manner. Old-school records and cassette tapes are analog signals. These media will product static and noise and will degrade over time. CDs are digital signals. As long as the compact is readable, the CD player will provide you with the exact sound as it was recorded. The CD itself might degrade over time, but the data will always be stored in its original form.

Since the inception of digitally stored music, the quality of music has remained high and to the same standard as it is today. Compact discs still offer the highest form of music available. The problem with compact discs is that the amount of bits required to store a song is high. That leads us to the modern use of data compression and MP3. (And another article for another day!)

Definition of term " Satellite surveillance " is one of those technological capabilities that we most often associate with the military and with organizations like the CIA. What we do not think about, however, is how satellite surveillance is available to more than just the American government. Space is owned by no one, and anyone who has the funds can launch a satellite. Telecommunications companies, various governments, and media corporations all have satellites. Additionally, it is possible to make use of satellites using computers. In fact, that is how satellite phones and GPS devices work. So, who uses satellite surveillance? The answer: just about anyone.

Satellite surveillance can be used for a variety of purposes. Most common now is relays to watch television or to place phone calls. For the United States and Canada, it actually provides a way to more effectively track and fight fires. And it is possible to track powerful storms and other natural events. And it is no surprise to most people that pictures from satellites can be used by government agencies to keep tabs on possible enemies. What many people do not know is the pinpoint accuracy with which it is possible to view an object about three feet in size.

So, who uses satellite surveillance? For the most part, anyone with access to a satellite?s codes and information and a computer can access the images from that satellite. Television stations use them to show pictures of swirling clouds that represent storms, NASA uses them to take pictures of deep space, and governments and militaries use them to spy on others, and quite possibly even on its own citizens. Interestingly enough, regular U.S. law enforcement agencies do not have regular satellite surveillance access. In order for law enforcement to use satellites for surveillance, they must have warrants and be given special permission. It is even conceivable that some well-connected criminal organizations might possible have satellite access.

Satellite surveillance is a fact of life in our world. Whether or not you truly have to be worried about being singled out for this special attention is a matter for debate. However, it is worth noting that if you are a person of interest to the government, chances are that it can find you and then keep tabs on you.

7 Rules of Data Backups

There are major 7 rules of creating Data Backups. Backups of company data are carried out for two main reasons. The first is to cater for those times when a document is inadvertently deleted or damaged and you wish to recover the original document; the second is as part of a disaster recovery plan in case something catastrophic happens to your computers (e.g., victims of a fire or theft).

Backups cost time, money and effort to implement, and they are of no value right up until the time you need them. This means they tend to be given a low priority, but ultimately they may easily represent the difference between your business surviving and failing. In this TipSheet, we look at the most common mistakes businesses make with backups.

1. Don't keep any volatile data on desktop PCs

In many organisations, documents are kept on the hard drive of desktop PCs. It is unlikely that this is backed up regularly, if at all. A PC can easily be replaced: last week's quotations may not be so easy to replace. In particular, check that email is not stored on the local hard drive (this is very common in small to medium size businesses). All documents, spreadsheets, email, etc should be kept on a central server, which is in turn backed up regularly.

2. Automate the backup process

Backups are tedious to do. At 6:30pm, most people would prefer to set off home or join colleagues in the bar rather than stay in the office to find the correct tape and start a backup. Automating tedious tasks means they get done.

3. Backup often

Re-entering data is tedious and frustrating. Backing up your company data once a week means that the most you should ever have to re-input is one week's worth Backing up your company data once a day means the most you should ever have to re-input is one day's worth. Frequent backups lessen the impact of data loss.

4. Keep backups offsite

If your business premises suffer a fire or flood, it is likely that backup media will be lost as well. Fireproof safes only protect media for a given time, typically one hour - if you use one, check the manufacturer's specification. If you always keep your backup tape in the server then when it is stolen the thief will probably throw the tape away. It's worth nothing to him, but it could represent bankruptcy to you.Monitor the backup process

While automating backups is a good idea, do check that they are running correctly. Make sure new files are being backed up; make sure the files of new users are being backed up. A quick check once a week could avert a much more serious problem later.

6. Test the recovery procedure periodically

Without warning, give the backup recovery manual to a member of staff and see how long it takes them to recover data. Many organisations never do this! No one involved with creating the manual or the backups themselves should be involved in the test. The results of the test should be analysed and the manual updated accordingly. A recovery test should be carried out at least twice a year. This proves both that the backups themselves are usable, and that your organisation understands how to use them if necessary.

7. Produce a "backup recovery" manual

A major disaster is not the time to try to remember how to recover data from your backup media. Have an idiot-proof, step-by-step procedure written - with a copy stored off-site - detailing how to reinstate your company data.

How to Back Up Your PC

In a small business computer typically the users need to Backup their PC regularly. A business should have a policy in place for managing backups especially due to Sarbanes - Oxyley.

There are Four options for backing up:
* External hard drive
* CD-RW (CD rewriteable) drive
* Tape
* Network server

Two options for what to back up:
* Everything
* Data files (.doc, .xls, .db, .ppt, .txt, etc.)

Personally, I use an external hard drive (this is a 120 gig hard drive, they also have 20 gig, 40 gig, 60 gig, and 80 gig available. I suggest getting one that is 20 gigs bigger than your hard drive.). It saved me when my computer had to be reformatted a few months ago. Typically, the hard drive is supposed to be rebootable and load everything back exactly as it was before the crash.

Obviously, that didn't happen. It worked out for the best because some of my system files were bad. The hard drive still had my data files and programs. First, I referred to my latest copy from Belarc Advisor. This is a free program that lists all the applications on your computer. Since I don't have a CD of every program I use, this was handy.

Using this list, I reloaded all applications first starting with the most important working down to the least important. It takes time to load everything, so you won't want to reload everything in one sitting.

As soon as an application was reloaded, I copied all of its data files from the external hard drive back on the computer. I try to keep all of my data files in as minimal folders as possible. That is where My Documents, My Music, and My Photos comes in handy, but I hate those names. For the most part, I have /docs, /media (with subfolders for music and photos), /sites (for Web-related docs).

Keeping data files in as few folders as possible makes it easier to keep them organized and to find them when you need to restore data.

Programs like Norton's Ghost, AlohaBob, and NTI Backup Now are useful for creating and managing back ups.

Using a RW-CD and tape back up are also viable solutions. I prefer the external hard drive since I don't have to use an external media like a tape or CD. No sitting around and waiting for the CD or tape to fill up and inserting the next one.

Thumb drives (portable hard drives) are helpful, but typically can't hold enough if you have as much data as I do. It's great for critical data and data that you need at all times.

When buying a USB drive, make sure you have USB 2.0 not 1.1 as most the drives require 2.0.

At a minimium, back up your data files - the products of your work. Have a copy of these file somewhere other than your hard drive. Ideally, I'd like to back up my data on a network server because:

* if my house were on fire (ptpthpthpth), the files are safe on a server located somewhere else.

* if the computer goes crazy and ruins everything in its path including the back up hardware, the files are safe on a server.

However, storage is not cheap enough for personal use just yet. I am sure it's one of the future options we can expect to become a regular part of safe computing.

Most people have heard the term of GPS but not many people know how to use it, when to use it. Oke let me explain it and hopefully it will added your knowledge in case you have to use it in certain condition.

GPS or Global Positioning Systems is a term that most commonly conjures up images of vehicle navigation systems, space-age satellite technology, and interactive maps for outdoors-types and sportsmen.

But the reality is that there are far more applications of Global Positioning Systems beyond GPS vehicle tracking or map navigation that everyday people like us can benefit from. All it takes is a bit of creativity, and some trial and error.

There are currently many possibilities that can benefit for you in your busy day or in hectic life.

1. Keep track of elderly members of your family, so that they don?t wander off alone.

2. Get emergency road side assistance at a touch of a button from your vehicle, so you can get help exactly where and when you need it.

3. Plan a road trip around interesting points of interests, landmarks, campsites, diners, etc, and hear fewer "Are we there yets?"- and of course get the most out of that expensive gas.

4. Find lost pets easily using collars with built-in GPS, better than running around in your pajamas hollering like a maniac.

The GPS function right now is limited by the relatively bad connection to the satellite feeds when we are indoors in buildings, homes, or behind anything that could obstruct the GPS connection. However with the investment and development in a new satellite network called Galileo which should be completed in the near future, these problems should be eliminated drastically.

Despite the problems above , GPS still offers a world of benefits as mentioned earlier, and with any technology, it will only get better.

Tesla Sells Out its All-Electric Roadsters

It seems the Tesla Roadster's hefty price tag hasn't scared away buyers. Less than a month after unveiling its new all-electric sports car, Tesla Motors' CEO Martin Eberhard announced that the company has already sold all 100 of its limited-edition Roadsters.

Tesla Motors introduced the world to the Roadster at its "Signature Hundred Event" on July 19th. The Tesla Roadster reaches top speeds of 130 mph with a 0-to-60 time of about 4 seconds. It travels 250 miles on a single charge of its whisper-quiet electric motor.

Among early buyers were Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin and eBay co-founder Jeff Skoll, all of whom are investors in Tesla Motors. While Tesla has received one-hundred $100,000 deposits, each of which guarantees a Tesla Roadster for the depositor, only a few of these vehicles have been completed.

Verbatim Builds Security into USB Flash Drives

Verbatim is launching a new line of USB flash drives with built-in security features that the company hopes will appeal to enterprises.
The Charlotte, N.C., storage maker said the new drives, called Store 'n' Go Corporate Secure USB Flash Drives, will include "mandatory security features," such as a hardware-based AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) data encryption and anti-tamper password entry protection.

Securing data has become a hot-button issue of late, following several high-profile computer theft cases that exposed companies' and or individuals' data to potential theft. Thus, Verbatim added the security features with the aim of protecting the files stored on its drives, should one become lost or stolen.

A user's password is protected by an SHA-1 hashing algorithm that makes sure the password is not stored in a raw form in the drive's memory, the company said. This type of mandatory protection ensures that the password cannot be lifted from a PC's memory by hackers, according to the company.

"To protect stored data from dictionary or brute-force hack attempts, the Store 'n' Go Drive enters lock-down mode and securely erases all data after 10 consecutive failed log-in attempts," the company said in a statement.

The new Verbatim Corporate USB drives feature a controller that moves files at a rate of 14MB per second and has a maximum read speed of 23MB per second.

The Corporate USB drives will become available in September. A 1GB drive will be priced at $79, a 2GB drive at $129 and a 4GB drive at $269.

With the arrival of products such as Verbatim's Store 'n' Go, built-in encryption for storage devices appears to be gaining momentum. In June, the Trusted Computing Group's Storage Work Group announced that it is preparing a hardware-based data encryption technology standard that will allow hard drive makers to add encryption capabilities directly into their products.

Epson Updates Its Brilliant Photo Viewers

While Epson's P-2000 and P-4000 photo viewers weren't the greatest portable media players, you couldn't ask for a whole lot more from a photo viewer. The newest versions are the P-3000 and P-5000, which offer 40GB and 80GB of hard drive storage space, respectively, as well as slots for CompactFlash and Secure Digital media cards (and other formats via an optional adapter).

The new models sport redesigned (and somewhat larger) bodies, with improved button layouts and a slightly bigger screen (4 inches, compared to the previous models' 3.8-inch screens). Epson claims that the P-3000 and P-5000 are 250 percent faster than the older models—which is a big plus, as the P-4000 I tested was quite slow. The 640- by 480-pixel screen uses Epson's Photo Fine Ultra technology and is still the sharpest in the business, with the pixels packed 212 to the inch. The screen also uses what Epson claims is the world's first four-color filter, which provides an enhanced color gamut approaching that of Adobe's RGB profile, helping the device accurately reproduce 16 million colors.

Many of the older models' photographer-friendly features remain, including support for RAW files (complete with EXIF data) from compatible D-SLR cameras, as well as support for JPEG images and PictBridge compatibility for printing directly to select printers. You can also show photos and video on external monitors using the built-in TV output capability. Other holdovers include a built-in monaural speaker and very broad video file format support for M-JPEG, MOV, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, VOB, DivX (the real format, as well as AVI files using the DivX codec). Audio format support is limited to MP3 and AAC—though the included software can convert WMA and WAV files to compatible formats.

Philips Demos Digital Game Board

On Friday Philips will reveal the Entertaible, a digital board-gaming surface, at the Internationale Funkausstellung, a consumer electronics show in Berlin. The board uses touchpad navigation and allows multiple people to play a variety of games on a digitized surface.

The Entertaible, which was originally revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January in Las Vegas, runs on Windows XP. So far, it is only in demonstration stages and not available for market, partially because not enough games have been developed for it yet.

"The new concept is that you combine the interaction that you normally have when you play a board game together with speeds and interactivity for electronic games," said Hans Driessen, a spokesperson for Philips. "We created the concept early this year and since then Philips has taken it into development."

The Entertaible has a 32-inch horizontal LCD, multi-touch and shape recognition technology, and PC-based control logic. It is a table-top unit that measures 10 centimeters in height with a platinum-colored border.

The Entertaible will be capable of displaying several different types of games, although Driessen could not say how many. Currently Philips has only developed a few games for demonstration, but they are looking to do business with content developers who will develop more before it hits market, which is likely to be in 2007.

Philips has not yet set a price for the Entertaible, but Driessen said the company does not expect to market it to the home electronics buyers. It is more likely that consumers will see it in public settings such as bars, restaurants, and hotels before they see it at a friend's home.

"At this point it won't be consumer pricing, although we could reach consumer levels at a certain time," Driessen said. "We foresee places where people want to meet and have fun together like in bars or restaurants."

The Entertaible can sync up to the Internet as well as play without a connection where the game tracks users' scores, prompts users to take their turns, and senses movement of pieces like pawns and chips.

"It's very intuitive because it's live board play," Driessen said. "The fun thing is that you can do all interaction with the fingers, so people can sit down and just know what to do with a very brief instruction."

Philips will be testing prototypes of the Entertaible in pubs, bars, and other public locations in the fourth quarter of 2006.

Killer Portable Video Players

Before you head off to campus this year don't forget to pack a portable video player. Great for quick study breaks, long trips, and sharing files among friends. While everyone's waiting anxiously for the "true" video iPod to come out, there are a bunch of portable devices out there right now that let you watch video on the go. You have a number of options, but these are some of our favorites.

For the most part, I recommend sticking to hard drive-based MP3 players and portable media players (PMPs). Their screens are generally large enough to avoid serious eyestrain and they play video at a nice quick frame rate of 30 frames per second. The last thing you want to do after hours of cramming or writing papers is to stare at a substandard display. Keep in mind that when I review a portable device, I take into account its primary function first and rate it accordingly. For example, players like the iPod and Creative Zen Vision:M are video-capable, but they're primarily audio players. Devices like the Archos AV500, however, are obviously audio-capable, but their main focus is on video.

Tiny Flash Players
Because of current hardware limitations for flash-based players, the ones that do play video are limited to 15 frames per second, which means the image appears slightly jumpy, especially in action-packed sequences. Whether or not you'd even want to watch video on the tiny screens most flash players offer is a different story, but I'm picky. Still, if I had to pick a flash player to watch videos on, it would be the iriver Clix, because it's got a 2.2-inch screen and nothing else on the front to distract your eyes.

Small Players with Compact Hard Drives
Many people view the Creative Zen Vision:M as the top MP3 player because it has more features (including an FM tuner and audio recording capabilities) and broader video format support than the iPod. Considering the 30GB ZVM as a video player, I'd agree, but I still prefer the iPod as an audio player, in part because of the iPod's support for lossless compression, and also because I'm not crazy about the ZVM's touch strip control. The ZVM's 2.5-inch screen supports more colors than the iPod's, and the device itself is very nice-looking. (Although a bit on the chunky side for a 30GB player). The thing I like most about it, though, is that I can play most of my AVI video files (including DivX and XviD) without converting them. It's also PlaysForSure-compatible for WMV-based video download, subscription, and rental services.

The fifth-generation Apple iPod (with video) is no doubt the favorite among audio players. Equipped with a sharp 2.5-inch screen this video-capable device has the simplest user interface in the business, although colors don't look as good as they do on the Creative ZVM. The iPod is available in 30GB or 60GB versions. One of the big plusses with the iPod is that you get access to an enormous amount of video content via the iTunes Music Store (iTMS). Although full-length movies aren't available yet, the rumor mill has been churning wildly about the addition of a forthcoming movie-download service to the iTMS, so we'll keep our eyes peeled for you. The drawbacks are that the iPod's native format support is very limited, so if you want to watch AVI or WMV files, you'll need to convert them to a format the iPod can read.

The Toshiba gigabeat S is the newest player on the block, and Toshiba really did a great job designing it. The controls are easy to use (although I don't really like the side placement of the playback buttons), and its interface has a familiar Media Center look and feel. The player has a 2.4-inch screen that's very sharp and bright, and movies can be viewed in landscape mode. On the content side, the gigabeat supports video recorded on a Media Center PC, WMV files, and protected WMV files from PlaysForSure-certified video download, rental, and subscription services like Vongo and CinemaNow. It's available in 30GB and 60GB models.

Midsize Media Players
The now-venerable Archos AV500 is one of the most impressive devices I've come across yet. Shipping in 30GB or 100GB models, this PMP not only plays video, it records it from any analog video source and can even be programmed like a VCR. The 4-inch widescreen LCD is sharp and very bright, and the battery is removable and user-replaceable. File format support includes DivX-encoded AVI video using the MPEG-4 Simple Profile. The device is also PlaysForSure-compatible with WMV-based video download, subscription, and rental services.

The Creative Zen Vision caused quite a stir when it came out, thanks to its stunningly high-resolution 3.7-inch screen. The polished interface is easy to navigate, and the controls are very simple and effective. It is still an excellent choice for watching video on the go despite a less-than-ideal viewing angle, and you can use the tiny built-in speaker to share content with your friends. You can't record video directly onto the device, though, as you can with the Archos AV500. Unfortunately, the player is available only in a 30GB capacity, but the battery is easily replaceable. The Zen Vision works with PlaysForSure video download, rental, and subscription services.

While I haven't had a chance to formally review it yet, the ATO iSee was on display at CES 2006, where I had the opportunity for a hands-on demo. This impressive iPod add-on lets you use any dock-connector-equipped iPod as a storage device for recording video from any analog source. And you can also watch video even on older monochrome-screen iPods, thanks to the built-in 3.6-inch color LCD, which is sharp and bright. Watch for my upcoming review here on PCMag.com.

Living Large
The Archos AV700 is the granddaddy of PMPs, with a bright, 7-inch widescreen LCD. It's not cheap and it's not pocketable, but it is perfect for the back seat of a car, or for travelers who don't want to bring a whole laptop with them. The device measures 4.2 by 8.2 by 0.8 inches, has a removable battery, and is available in 40GB or 100GB capacities. Like the AV500, it can record video from any analog source, and it supports DivX-encoded AVI files (using the MPEG-4 Simple Profile). It's also PlaysForSure-compatible with WMV-based video download, subscription, and rental services.

VPN Virtual Public Network

A VPN utilizes public telecommunications networks to conduct private data communications. Most VPN implementations use the Internet as the public infrastructure and a variety of specialized protocols to support private communications through the Internet.

VPN follows a client and server approach. VPN clients authenticate users, encrypt data, and otherwise manage sessions with VPN servers utilizing a technique called tunneling.

VPN clients and VPN servers are typically used in these three scenarios:

1. to support remote access to an intranet,
2. to support connections between multiple intranets within the same organization, and
3. to join networks between two organizations, forming an extranet.

The main benefit of a VPN is the lower cost needed to support this technology compared to alternatives like traditional leased lines or remote access servers.

VPN users typically interact with simple graphical client programs.
These applications support creating tunnels, setting configuration parameters, and connecting to and disconnecting from the VPN server. VPN solutions utilize several different network protocols including PPTP, L2TP, IPsec, and SOCKS.

VPN servers can also connect directly to other VPN servers. A VPN server-to-server connection extends the intranet or extranet to span multiple networks.

Many vendors have developed VPN hardware and software products. Some of these do not interoperate due to the immaturity of some VPN standards.

Ten tips for packaging your game to sell.
To the average consumer, shopping for a piece of videogame software is a lot like dating: First impressions are everything.
Studies suggest it takes anywhere from 2-3 seconds for a given product to make an impact on buyers. Web-only properties can do so in as little
as 50 milliseconds, an infinitesimal fraction as much time.

With countless observers' purchasing decisions made within similar windows, the implications for marketers are profound. In short, while you can't judge a book (let alone PC/Xbox 360 title) by its cover, how potential suitors look, dress and comport themselves is nearly as important as each package's actual contents.

No surprise there. Presenting digital diversions in such a way as to make them more commercially appealing is, naturally, the name of the game.
(See tradeshow appearances, PR campaigns, online/print/TV advertising…) But comb the aisles at local retailers or browse online storefronts, and you'll be surprised at the seeming lack of effort and imagination placed into branding most titles with their own singular, attention-getting
identity.

You've poured multiple years, thousands of man-hours and millions of dollars into your latest bar-raising, industry-revolutionizing project. Here are just a few simple, straightforward suggestions for helping it better look the part.

1. Keep it simple, silly.

Graphical assets shouldn't just be first-rate. They should also immediately get key messaging across and appeal to a broad demographic. Niche buyers may appreciate them, but nix the machinegun-touting genies and screens full of statistics: Focus instead on the core theme which makes your title tick. Is it baseball, fantasy role-playing, racecar driving? Lead with pictures/symbols – a batter swinging, wizard casting or high-end auto burning rubber – that convey the point in a way all ages and interest groups can understand.

2. Dress for success.

Unreadable text, fuzzy/indistinct characters, screenshots so small they're nearly invisible… deadlines or no, never let half-baked layouts out the door. A few hi-res renders, action-packed images and fun, freeware fonts are all it takes to jazz up the homeliest box. Short on assets? Ask
developers for artwork, have fans submit images or commission professional illustrations. You wouldn't attend a wedding in a stained undershirt and sweatpants. Don't disrespect consumers by dressing down for an equally-important occasion – your game's grand unveiling – either.

3. Less talk, more action.

No one likes a chatterbox. Say what you mean clearly and succinctly, lest enthusiasts (hardly known for their attention span to begin with) be instantly intimidated at a glance. Keep game descriptions under 150 words when penning general copy and bullet-point features wherever
possible. (No excuses either; mobile gaming providers work with 150 characters or less.) As a rule, let screenshots tell the tale. Handy tip: Using an empty or static environmental photo's a sure way to induce viewer apathy.

4. Dare to be different.

Unique sales points (USPs) are one-of-a-kind features your product offers others don't; stressing them, the best way to entice consumers or retailers who'd otherwise straddle the fence. At $20-$60/game, most players can't afford to be collectors, or prospective distribution partners inventory speculators. Customizable units, options for battling hundreds of opponents online, guest appearances by Kirstie Alley… Make a point of expressing why your first-person shooter or real-time strategy title's different than, say, the other 15,000 also currently clogging store shelves.

5. Keep everything on the record.

Critics' opinions matter… Whenever possible, include them on the box. (Movie studios use preview screenings to source advertising quotes – you can too.) Nonetheless, do so judiciously. Don't misquote: "Might be game of the year…" doesn’t mean is. Avoiding overdoing it: Except when touting an award-winning title's critical reception, use three snippets max. And don't underestimate consumers; unless from a professional source, e.g. PC Gamer, avoid overusing enthusiast outlet-specific commentary. A sentence mention in Newsweek still beats an A+ from
ElectronicArmpit.com.

6. Pack it in.

Consumers love stretching every dollar further – help them do so by including cost-effective pack-ins. DVDs present just one compelling model:
On-disc bonus content like making-of videos, director commentary and art galleries make welcome additions to any interactive outing. Alternately, consider featuring e-books. Costs to add PDF files to a CD/DVD are negligible, while you can still showcase titles' cover artwork and retail price freely on game packaging. ("Free $14.99 value with purchase!") Don't be afraid to think outside the box.

7. Put some feeling into it.

Emotional responses can be a strong sales trigger – exploit them via clever visual cues. Hocking an adaptation of a best-selling fantasy novel? Package it like a storybook, complete with gilded gatefold cover. Shilling a mystery or sci-fi adventure? Take a lesson from '80s publishing pioneer Infocom, who included faux newspapers and kitschy toys with several popular titles to help create atmosphere. Comic book spoofs with period-style art, safecracking games featuring dial-shaped cover inserts… Use your imagination to spark the viewer's.

8. Mind your Ps and Qs.

No exceptions: When presenting either yourself or your products in a professional setting, poor grammar and spelling are simply inexcusable. Such errors aren't just tacky; they instantly shatter suspension of disbelief, ripping the reader right out of whatever mental picture you've been painting. Take time to proofread everything twice and always run copy by at least two associates to elicit feedback. There's nothing like exploring the gloomy, run-down corridors of a "haunted mouse" to send a shiver up one's spine…

9. Give buyers some incentive.

Offering consumers incentives – i.e. buy one, get one free promotions or discounts for purchasing multiple products – is another handy way to increase sell-in. Consider rewarding shoppers with a range of added bonuses from frequent buyer programs to free online map/unit downloads, access to regular content updates or the chance to join exclusive beta-test programs or user communities. Such extras needn't cost you a thing, and in many cases can even help enhance quality assurance or marketing research efforts pro bono.

10. Randomize value-adds.

Especially poignant for online game providers: Think about presenting several variations on specific giveaways (e.g. different character skins, pets, weapons or vehicle decals) that consumers can randomly earn with each purchase. That way, every user who downloads an expansion pack or virtual playing card supplement can, potentially, receive entirely different content from another, giving them a personal connection to the title. Such simple tricks also help promote discussion, prompt item swaps/interaction between players and otherwise garner additional fan and media attention.

The future of Voice Mobile content and technology.
Mobile operations of telcos are progressively overtaking fixed line operations. This is largely due to fixed-line operators not having introduced significant new products, services or cost-saving technologies in the same way that mobile operators have. However, despite retaining their role as cash cows for incumbent operators, fixed and mobile voice services are progressively being overtaken by broadband. Increasingly, operators will need to take a holistic view of the market, necessitating a total review of their business models.

While high growth rates have been maintained globally until the present time, there is a massive shift taking place away from growth in developed markets to growth in the new emerging markets such as India, China, Africa and Latin America. By 2005, global growth stood at around 20%. Based on 2 billion subscribers, this is a massive development, and growth could lead to 5 billion subscribers over the next 15 to 25 years.

As more participants enter the mobile market, competition is increasing, with a subsequent decrease in prices and increase in services offered. To maintain the high growth of the mobile market, and counter falling prices, mobile carriers have started to offer services previously the domain of the fixed operators, and the fixed operators have had to respond.
In developed markets, mobile call charges are falling by 15%-20% per annum. While several countries in this market still see high growth in new mobile subscribers, they also see their overall revenue flattening because of the drop in call charges, as well as the fact that new subscribers are, in general, low-usage customers. As would be expected, markets with strong competition have seen a considerable drop in mobile call charges in developed markets through significant price competition around capped price plans. The others have retained declining but relatively high ARPUs. Since 2002, the low priced countries in this market have seen a levelling out of the mobile charges as they approach fixed call charges. These countries are stimulating further growth by developing mobile value added services.

In the new emerging markets, services are available for as low as $5 a month and call charges as low as 1 cent or even less per minute, with handsets available for $30 and 2nd hand ones even lower. It is easy to understand why the emerging market is seeing a mobile explosion.
Prepaid mobile services have rapidly increased their share of the total mobile market and are virtually the only option in emerging markets.

The future of MVNO remains uncertain, they are providers of mobile services independently from the operator that is supplying the network. With more competition and new services, operators will have to consider better MVNO deals in order to grow the market.
lack of success of new 3G services, that followed the already slow uptake of dedicated mobile data systems that were developed in the 1990s, is a clear indication that interest in traditional mobile data is still limited. WAP, GPRS, MMS, 1X and other developments over the past few years certainly have not changed the situation. Current mobile technologies are not well suited for economically viable business models for mobile data. WiMAX might challenge mobile data towards the end of the decade, but the mobile industry is trying to fight back with HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access).

The lack of suitable infrastructure has hampered the growth of mobile data. As with voice applications, the emerging nextgen (NGN) platforms are going to have a major impact. While it still needs to deliver, IMS is an example of such NGN developments. Mobile voice communications will consolidate in mature markets but continue their spectacular growth in developing countries, mainly Africa. However, mobile data, beyond SMS and particular countries such as Japan and Korea, will remain a niche market business and will grow into IP-based WiMAX services towards.

Connect to a Work Computer Remotely

One of the most requested items I hear from small business folks is accessing their work computer from a remote location. They don't want to pay the fees of services like GoToMyPC, Timbuktu, etc. They want a reliable and cost effective method to get to their data remotely. Most people assume that this type of thing is too complicated. I have news for you - you can do this. So, grab a cup of coffee, pull up a chair, and get ready to go remote.

Before we get started, let's get some things straight. When I speak of a "host" computer, I am talking about the computer that you want to connect to from a remote location. When I speak of a "remote" computer, I am talking about the computer that you are using to connect to the "host." I am also assuming that:

1.You have high speed internet access 2.Your host computer is running Windows XP Professional 3.You are using a Linksys router, though you can do this on other routers

Most small business setups have a very simple network design. Let me diagram a typical design for you: -->broadband internet line to office -->internet jack in office -->line from wall to dsl or cable modem -->line from modem to router-->lines to computers. The major player in this setup, for our purposes, is the router. The router routes traffic to various locations. We are going to use it to route our remote desktop traffic to our host computer.

Alright, take a deep breath and get ready to learn. The first step is to make sure your host (the office machine you will be connecting to) has a static ip (internet protocol) address. Most folks get really confused when techies like me start talking about ip addresses. Think of an ip address like a mailing address for a home. Each one is unique on a street. Well, each ip address in a given network must be unique or computers get really confused. Usually, a router takes care of assigning an ip address to each computer as it is booted up, or turned on. We need to make sure your ip address is static. What this means is that it will not change. If it did, we wouldn't be able to find it. It would be like trying to find a house that changes locations. See what I mean? So, let's find out your ip address. Click on "Start," go to "Run," and type "cmd." Click "ok" and a black box will appear. Type "ipconfig." Note the ip address listed here. It will most likely be a 192.168.1.x number, where x is a number 2-254.

Now, we want to assign our host computer with a static ip address. Click on "Start" in the lower left hand corner and then click on "Control Panel". Again, this is on the "host" computer - the one you want to connect to. Now, click on "Network Connections." You will see a "Local Area Connection." Right click on this and select "Properties." This will bring up a box. In this box is a white box that will include "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)." Click this to highlight and select "Properties." This is where we will enter in a static ip address - you know, a 192.168.1.x number. Click on "Use the following address" and enter 192.168.1.180 in the ip address area. Now, go down to the gateway. The gateway is simply the router. Enter 192.168.1.1. Note: if your ip address happens to be something different, like 192.168.0.x, then you would enter 192.168.0.180 for your static ip address and 192.168.0.1 for your gateway.

The next step is to make sure our host computer can accept remote connections. Click on "Start," go to "Control Panel," and select "System." You will see a "Remote" tab. Click it. Make sure the box entitled "allow users to connect remotely to this computer" is checked.

Don't give up - you're almost there! Now, we need to set up our router to forward traffic to that static ip address. Open up Internet Explorer or your favorite browser. Type in "192.168.1.1". This will bring up a login for your router. If it's a Linksys, it will be a blank user name and "admin" for the password. If you have another router make, just look at the instructions or visit the vendor website for the user name and password. Go to the "Status" tab and note the "Wan" or "internet" ip address. This will not be a 192.168.1.x number. That is the "lan" ip address. Write the "Wan" or "internet" address down. We will use that later.

Now, go to the "forwarding" tab. This is under the "advanced" area on most Linksys routers. Enter in port number "3389" into the port number boxes - start and end. Enter the static ip address we set earlier - 192.168.1.180. Make sure it is enabled and click "Save Settings."

First, make sure you can connect internally to the host computer. Open up Remote Desktop by clicking on "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories," "Communications," and "Remote Desktop Connection." Enter in 192.168.1.180 and click "Connect." Make sure you can login. If you can't, you either don't have the right static ip address for the host, the host is turned off, or Remote Connections aren't enabled. Now, go outside the office and open up Remote Desktop. If you don't see it there, you will need to download the Remote Desktop Client from Microsoft. Once that is open, enter the ip address we got from our router - the Wan or internet ip address. This is not the 192.168.1.x number. You should be greeted with a login for your remote host computer. Congratulations, you just set up a free, remote connection to your computer!

PS - make really sure that your password on the host machine is a "strong" password. Meaning, please don't make it "123." Make it something like "B1zN1z!" Notice the numbers and special character "!".

Technology Replace Human Translation Services

Imagine a world in which you speak or write your language, and the rest of the globe could instantly understand you in theirs. While linguists tremble at the thought, perfect software-performed translation (known as “machine translation”) would save governments and businesses many billions of dollars a year. With enough platforms and distribution, it would increase productivity and add perhaps trillions more of value to worldwide GDP.

Some even believe that frictionless communication across languages would help different cultures and religions to see eye to eye, helping to bring about peace on earth (i.e., read as “no more war in Iraq”).

So the first key question on the minds of many is whether or not technology will ever replace human translation services. The short answer is…drum roll please...not in our lifetime, if ever.

Why? Because software can only produce perfect output when it receives perfect input; and humans almost never communicate with perfect usage of the rules of grammar and terminology upon which software relies to translate one language into another.

The job of building and updating a database of literally billions of exceptions to the rules of language, and then match them between hundreds of languages and thousands of dialects, would require more humans than will ever be economically feasible. And, let’s not forget the countless new words and expressions that we invent every single day.

Some experts estimate that the top 10 spoken languages on the planet produce a combined 100,000 new technical terminology, slang words and localized expressions each and every year! How can these possibly be captured and translated across so many languages on a timely basis?

I suggest that you carefully read this paragraph and imagine how software, which is rigid and pitiful in the face of human subtley, could possibly translate it with both figurative and literal accuracy. You see, language is not a science, but an art. As is translation. And art is a human endeavor.

Okay, so we are all relieved to know that the livelihood of individual linguists and translation services is not at risk. But what about our second question...

Will translation technology increase the ROI on globalization and produce social benefits that we only dare imagine in today’s rocky world?

My friends, I am happy to say that cultures, businesses, lovers and even religions are already being brought together by these technologies. The effects in our lifetime will be monumental.

HDTV And The Future OF DVD Players

The HDTV revolution has changed the home electronics landscape for good already, but the real benefits of this advanced technology will soon be apparent in the next few years as it becomes more accepted and established. For the last half century television entertainment remained pretty much the same as far as the video and audio capabilities are concerned. There were some advances along the way including large screen TVs and VHS recorders/players, but essentially the viewing experience was unchanged.

Much of the staleness of TV entertainment was due to the limitations of the analog system of broadcasting a TV signal. Only so much information could be sent over the air by analog format so no real advances in TV electronics were needed. But when satellite and cable TV entered the picture and introduced digital broadcasting, things began to change, and soon the DVD format just completely took over as the preferred medium for viewing movies at home on TV. The success of these digital format technologies has spurred the changeover from analog to fully digital entertainment and HDTV is the realization of that dream.

However, current DVD players are unable to display movies in high definition format even though their picture and sound is much improved than what has been available in the past. So there will be a need for dvd players to be taken to the next level now too as HDTV becomes an accepted standard for TV entertainment.

Already two of the largest manufacturers, Sony and Toshiba are set to introduce two competing technologies for displaying DVD entertainment in high definition format on a HDTV. Sony's version is called Blu-Ray, and Toshiba's is called HD DVD. Interestingly they are incompatible, so expect an electronics war to see which format gets accepted as the standard in coming years. As with all new technologies the initial models will be very expensive and the early DVDs that take advantage of this technology will be very limited, but if the meteoric rise of the initial DVD format is any clue, they can be expected to sell fast and become accepted very quickly.

DVRs(digital video recorders) will still be in their current format for the foreseeable future, but somewhere along the line you can expect to see units that record in high definition format to start showing up too. A lot probably depends on how quickly the new technologies are widely accepted.

As the switch to HDTV continues you can expect almost all new analog equipment to totally disappear in the next few years, perhaps as soon as 2010, so make your buying choices today with that well in mind. The future of TV entertainment is in high definition and dvd players and recorders will eventually meet those standards as well.

Seven Steps to XML Mastery

This articles will leads you to a complete understanding of exactly what you need to know to build and implement your own sophisticated XML solutions, whether for your personal web site or an enterprise-level organization. You will learn the series briefly describes the relationships among the various technologies as you travel the seven steps to XML mastery.

Just about eight years now since XML arrived on the scene in the form of a W3C recommendation outlining the rules for writing one’s own tag-based language. Before XML there was SGML i.e another tag description language but considered too hefty to jumpstart the new breed of data-centric apps just beginning to emerge from the Web.

Then of course, XML is ubiquitous. XML vocabularies have been defined for everything from Human Resources data to RSS feeds and SOAP envelopes. The main reason for XML’s success is its simplicity, fostering numerous XML vocabularies and a broad range of support tools and associated specs, which have enabled developers to leverage XML for a wide variety of tasks.

Trying to get a handle on all these technologies can be tricky, as I’ve learned over the past few years giving seminars and designing undergraduate and graduate classes in XML at SMU in Dallas. One thing I’ve learned is that, while technical mastery of the details of the XML specification is useful on a syntactic level, real learning comes from trying to use XML to solve problems. In trying to build XML solutions, you come to see how XML’s simplicity and support systems make it easy for a developer to turn out sophisticated apps with much less heartache and pain than with traditional development.

In trying to convey XML’s broad capabilities, I’ve found it useful to approach the study of XML and its family of technologies by structuring things around a seven-step program.

1. Read before you write. Just like kids learn to read before they can write, we’ll jump into our study of XML syntax and structure, learning to read by deconstructing some current XML vocabularies.

First, we’ll look at the structure of Rich Site Summary (RSS) documents and how RSS magic works. Then we’ll take a look at how Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) defines a lean XML format for drawing complex graphics. As we examine these XML vocabularies, we’ll look at how they use elements and attributes, as well as some of the other components you can add to an XML document, such as processing instructions and CDATA chunks. With an ability to read XML, you’re ready to move on to more ambitious tasks.

2. Display for the Web. With some foundational XML technology under your belt, you’ll be ready to go to work writing some XML and getting things set up for web display. To do this, we’ll set you up as a consultant for a hot new startup company that’s looking to take the Web by storm. You’ll be working for the up-and-coming ZwiftBooks Corp, where you’ll jump in to create some XML vocabularies and work with a web design team to establish the company’s web presence.

The trick here will be to bring company XML data in line with the Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and XHTML of the design team. Once an interface has been defined between the development and web team, the web team can work their design magic without worrying about stepping on the data. We’ll walk thru the steps involved in transforming company XML data into a form suitable for the Web.

3. Transform with XSLT. The key to XML manipulation is XSLT, a powerful XML transformation technology that processes XML input and can generate any kind of output. In this step, we’ll set things up so that XSLT does some of the heavy lifting on the detail work necessary to generate our company web pages automatically. As we’ll see, XSLT is a key technology for transforming XML into a form suitable for web display, such as XHTML. Then you learn how to put all this in play by leveraging the power of scripting languages to execute our XSLT transforms painlessly, creating a truly dynamic web site for ZwiftBooks Corp.

4. Apply parsing power. In step 4, we’ll take a look at some of the different parser technologies that have sprung up to help deal with XML at a programming level. For a company like ZwiftBooks, interested in building a corporate infrastructure around XML, it’s crucial that we understand programming options for reading and writing XML.

In this step, we’ll look at the two major parsing models, SAX and DOM, and then take a peek at how the mobile world is gearing up to handle the expected increasing volume of XML traffic, using a new pull parsing approach called StAX.

5. Add web services. Before XML, a company looking to set up a distributed network needed to decide on both a data format and a network infrastructure for moving its data around. Now, XML vocabularies such as SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI enable a new web services model by delivering XML over widely used and established web protocols such as HTTP.

In this step, we’ll look at XML from the standpoint of both consumers and providers of web services. We’ll explore how SOAP can be used to structure XML messages, how WSDL is used to specify the messaging to request a service, and how UDDI enables service lookup from repositories. Along the way, we’ll also look at how companies like Amazon.com are making use of Representational State Transfer (REST) as an alternative to their SOAP interfaces.

6. Employ the semantic web. Tim Berners-Lee’s original vision for the Web included a framework not just for linking pages to each other but to provide a semantic underpinning to web page content, so that software agents were free to roam from page to page carrying out sophisticated tasks for users.

In this step, we’ll consider how this vision is taking shape in the form of several semantic web initiatives. Your assignment will be to use semantic web technologies such as RDF and OWL to create new categories of web services for your users.

7. Ensure XML security. The expanding role of XML in network traffic means looking at options for keeping that data secure. Because XML often travels along a path with multiple players adding and transforming data, keeping XML secure is more complex than just encrypting it, because we often want to encrypt or sign only part of the XML. In this step, I’ll show you how XML encryption can help to secure your company data using encryption and digital signatures.

The Windows registry is the nerve center of your PC its made up of information called Keys and strings which simply put are directions for your software so it knows how to run.

Installing an application is an easy task for most users. But what about uninstalling? Do you know how to completely remove an application from your system? Did you know that most applications leave permanent files or registry entries on your system? In order to keep your system clean, you need to properly install and uninstall applications. Correctly uninstalling an application can ensure that it will not cause you any problems in the future.

The right way to uninstall software is definitely not the delete key. And it's not always the familiar Add/Remove Programs dialog. In many cases, you need to follow a series of steps in order to completely remove a program from your system.

Add/Remove Programs: This is the familiar application you can find on your Control Panel. It is (obviously) the most important tool that you use to remove an application. It is primarily intended for applications that don't offer an Uninstall program on their own. Most of the times however, it can be safely used to uninstall these applications as well, since their own uninstall program will be started by the Add/Remove Programs dialog. It can be found at Start - Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs.

Many applications tend to leave permanent files laying around on your hard disk. Your system does not need these files and so, apart from wasting space, sometimes they may adversely affect the performance of your system (e.g. an older version of a library may cause compatibility issues with newer applications). On the other hand, there are also programs that leave useless registry entries on your Windows registry that can cause similar problems.

A Registry cleaning program can be used to find and delete all registry keys, strings, files and folders that the program has left on your machine. This will result is a faster PC and a PC less Prone to errors.

How to deal with tape errors

Learn what you can do when you are faced with errors when trying to read your magnetic tapes.

There can be many reasons why a magnetic tape cannot be read; some of the issues can be temporary and others are more permanent. Some tape errors can be attributed to operational or pilot error or mishandling, while other errors can be the result of damaged media or tape drives.

Below are some reasons you may encounter tape errors:

Heat, smoke, fire and water damage
Damaged or broken tapes and cartridges
Accidental deletion or overwritten data and reformatted tapes
Tape drive and other mechanical wear and tear
Dirty tape drives
Lack of proper tape storage and handling
Exceeding manufacturer suggested lifetime of the media

When you encounter a tape media error, verify that the tape media is in fact bad, and that something else is not preventing you from reading your tapes. The following questions can help you to verify and diagnose the problem:

What errors are being logged by your tape drive when you try to read the tape?
Does the error occur if you try reading the tape on a different tape drive?
Are other tapes readable on the same tape drive using the same utilities?
Is there any obvious physical or visible damage to the tape media or cartridge?
Are you able to read the tape from a different server?
Is the tape encrypted or compressed, thus preventing the media from being read?
Has the tape media been properly acclimated if recently moved or transported?
Is there visible physical damage to the tape drive device?

A first step should be to check with your technology provider, or the vendor who sold you (and provides the servicing for) your tape drive. Some vendors have Web sites that list frequently asked questions and other troubleshooting tips that may help your diagnose your tape errors.

There are several firms providing services for recovering data from damaged or corrupted tapes. While this list isn't complete, a few companies that provide these services include: Imation, Quantum, Exabyte, Sun/STK, HP and IBM, among others.

In 2003, for example, after the tragic challenger space shuttle disaster, technicians at Imation along with NASA and other experts, were able to recover critical data from the severally damaged flight data recorder tapes of the stricken space shuttle to support the accident investigation.

There are specialty firms that deal with recovery of media from disk and/or tape as well as optical media. A Google search of the phrase "tape media recovery" will yield a list of different service providers that may meet your specific needs. Inquire if the vendor provides physical as well as logical (data) recovery of damaged media or if an external third party is involved in the process. Look for a recovery service provider that has experience and credibility in recovering damaged media matching your needs and requirements. For example, be familiar with which tape formats, type of tape drives, operating system and applications or backup utilities and data formats are they familiar with. Since critical and sensitive private data will reside on your tape media, look into and ask a service provider about their security and privacy policies -- including who will have access to the media and any recovered data.

To help minimize the chance of damaging tapes, exercise caution and follow manufacturer suggested best practices for tape handling and media storage. In addition, periodically and randomly audit and test tapes along with your data protection and archiving to tape media processes. As part of an audit, verify that the correct data is stored on the media and that it can be restored. Another safeguard is to test the restoration using a different tape drive to an alternate location to verify that the tape is good. Also, test and verify that your backup or archiving application parameter settings and configurations are correct as you intended. For critical data, make an alternate copy of the data on the same or different type of media and store in a climate controlled environment to minimize lost data.

AccessChk is a small, but powerful, security utility available for free from Sysinternals. It is a command line utility designed to allow administrators to see exactly what rights a particular group has to a specific resource. This type of functionality may not seem all that helpful. After all, you can look at an Access Control List and tell instantly what permissions a user or group has been assigned. However, AccessChk gives you much more granular results.

For example, suppose for a moment that I wanted to see what rights the Users group had over my server's C:\ folder. To do so, I could use the AccessChk command along with a couple of parameters that specify the group and the location for which I want to check the permissions. The actual syntax would look something like this:

AccessChk "Users" c:
And the result is similar to what's shown in Figure A. As you can see in the figure, AccessChk lists every file and folder in the location specified and tells what rights the specified group has. One thing worth mentioning is that the AccessChk command is case sensitive. If I had used a lowercase U when I typed Users, the command would not have worked.

Being able to look at granular file permissions is a good start, but AccessChk is not a one-trick pony. AccessChk is actually very flexible. You can use it to check what rights a particular user or group has to any file, folder, Registry key or service.

In the previous example, I showed you how to use AccessChk to see what rights the Users group has over the C:\ folder. You could easily change the command, however, to see what permissions the Users group has over the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Registry key. The syntax looks like this:

AccessChk –k "Users" hklm\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
The command's output looks something like what you see in Figure B.

Now that I have shown you a couple of examples of what you can do with AccessChk, let's look at the syntax. The syntax is as follows:

AccessChk [-q] [-s] [-r] [-w] [-n] [-v] [-k] [-c]
-Q Quiet mode, no banner is displayed
-S Recursive mode
-R Show only objects that have read access
-W Show only objects that have write access
-N Show only objects that have no access
-V Verbose output
-K The specified resource is a registry key
-C The specified name is a Windows Service (you can also omit the name to display all services.

What I like best about it (other than the price) is that it is such a light-weight utility. The executable file is only about 49 KB in size (the download is a 20 KB zip file). Unlike most of the more powerful commands, like utilities, this one is actually easy to use. It has a limited set of options, which prevents the utility's syntax from being overly complex. However, the utility does not sacrifice power or flexibility in the name of simplicity. In short, if you have to verify permissions on your network, you can't go wrong with AccessChk.

Emergency Alert Plan Will Send Alerts To Cell Phones

WASHINGTON—The Association of Public Television Stations and the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency said they completed the second phase of a pilot program to design a national digital platform to distribute emergency alerts to cell phones, personal computers and other devices.

“This project demonstrates how the capabilities of America’s public broadcasters can be utilized to dramatically enhance the ability of the President of the United States to communicate with the American public during a national crisis,” said John Lawson, president of APTS.

APTS said DHS-FEMA have committed $5 million by the end of next year to deploy the digital emergency system to 356 public TV stations.

“The current EAS has it roots in the Cold War, and still relies on technology from that era. You had to be watching one of the major networks or listening to a radio station to have a chance of receiving the alert. What we are announcing today is an alert system for the mobile, networked and digital America of the 21st Century,” said Lawson.

However, the selection of a technology to disseminate mass wireless warnings remains unclear.

Last Wednesday’s demonstration at public TV station WETA in Arlington, Va. largely focused on the capability of the digital emergency alert system platform, not the last-mile delivery of emergency messages.

The failure to overhaul the half century-old emergency alert system in the aftermath the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks has become a political embarrassment for the Bush administration and Congress. President Bush recently signed an executive order shifting some emergency alert service powers to DHS.

The Federal Communications Commission, which has yet to rule on an emergency alert reform proposal from 2004, is responsible for writing emergency warning regulations and enforcing them as they relate to television, radio and cable TV operators. There has been speculation the FCC could vote on emergency alert reform at its Aug. 3 meeting.

The House and Senate have bills pending to modernize the emergency alert system to take advantage of wireless and other popular communications technologies.

While DHS has not officially endorsed a technology for emergency wireless alerts, the agency appears to be leaning toward a cell broadcast approach embraced by Holland, South Korea and others, but largely shunned to date by the U.S. mobile phone industry.

One common security mistake is to treat the network and applications as separate entities that never interact. You may have separate people maintaining them, separate security policies, separate procedures and so on. Hardening Windows servers will go a long way toward protecting the integrity of the data on those servers, but you must also harden the network infrastructure itself. Start by taking the following five steps.

1. Implement access control lists (ACLs)

If someone can get inside your network, they can gain access to your Windows systems. You need to implement strict ACLs on your network equipment and grant access only to those users that require it. For example, do users in Houston ever need access to systems in New York? If not, chances are the traffic passing between those systems isn't essential to the business.

2. Implement network-based access control (NBAC)

Connecting systems to the network used to be a hassle: You had to build the network drivers, assign addresses and physically connect systems to get them to talk. Although this made it difficult for unauthorized systems to easily connect to the network, it created excessive administrative overhead. Then technologies like star-wired networks and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) made it exceedingly simple to connect systems to the network. At first I rejoiced! But now I realize anyone can connect to the network. In fact, approximately 90% of the customers I visit have live network jacks that I can easily plug into to gain network access even if they have some written policy that states unauthorized connections are not permitted.

NBAC seeks to provide an enforcement mechanism to support those written policies. With NBAC, you want to define what is an authorized user and ensure connected systems are running the appropriate patches and software versions. If they aren't, they are placed in quarantine until the system is patched or updated.

3. Restrict remote connections

Implementing a VPN can be a risky endeavor. It permits network access for both users and viruses. Instead of allowing VPN access to your entire network, implement network ACLs that restrict remote users only to the servers and resources they need. For instance, using a VPN to connect Citrix or Terminal Server farms ensures that the only traffic allowed through the VPN is the Citrix traffic to the Citrix servers; if a remote client's system is infected, it will not infect your network.

4. Restrict and secure wireless connections

If implemented behind your firewall, wireless LAN connections create a particularly large, gaping hole in your network perimeter. As a result, your wireless LAN connections should be treated like any other remote connection: Terminate them outside your firewall and require a VPN connection to gain access to internal and protected resources.

5. Implement IPsec

Implementing IPsec on your network is a great way to protect data in transit from being compromised. But it's no panacea. For example, if a machine is infected with Slammer, IPsec will only ensure the Slammer traffic is encrypted before it is transmitted. When used in conjunction with the other hardening methods, however, IPsec can serve as an effective method for protecting your internal traffic from prying eyes.

Conclusion

Due to network de-perimeterization, you can no longer rely exclusively on the network perimeter to protect systems and data. Removing the perimeter entirely is not the solution, nor is hardening the perimeter alone. You must also harden your Windows systems and network infrastructures to protect data in the event that the network perimeter fails or is circumvented.

Storage arrays can bring huge storage capacities to a data center. Critical corporate data is protected by allocating some array disks for RAID tasks, and tiered storage matches drive cost, reliability and performance against the value of corporate data. But choosing a storage array is not easy. Capacity and performance are still the most obvious considerations, but lower-end systems are rapidly expanding to include high-end features. "You now have [mid-tier] arrays with over 400 disk drives on them, so you can gave raw capacities in the hundreds of TB," says Greg Schulz, senior analyst at Evaluator Group.
